You can book your train tickts from Hanoi to sapa on our websitee in three simple steps:

  • Search for your desired express train by clicking on the search box or click on the train name under the footer.
  • Select the train that catches your attention. Each train is listed with details about price, itineraries and photo gallery, making it easy for you to compare and contrast.
  • Click on "Book Now" button and be transferred to the Booking Request Form. We will check the availability of your request and respond in 4 hours (office hours) and 12 hours (non-office hours).

2. What payment methods are accepted?

HanoiSapaTrain.com accept payment by credit card such as VisaCard, MasterCard and American Express. You can conveniently pay online and receive an eticket to your email afterwards.

3. What is included in the Sapa train ticket price?

Your ticket includes:

  • A comfortable bed in an air-conditioned shared or private cabin
  • Clean bedding and bottled water
  • Light snacks or fresh fruit (for VIP cabin)

Luxury or high-class train options may also provide extra amenities such as Wi-Fi, wet towels, toothbrush and toothpaste sets, soft drinks or beer, wine, and small souvenirs.

Not included: peak season or holiday surcharges, personal expenses, and tips.

4. How do I buy tickets for my children?

Child fares vary slightly depending on the train operator. Please let us know your preferred train name and your child’s age, and we’ll provide the exact pricing and policy details.

Note: Child 2 years old and under can travel free of charge, sharing berth with parent(s).

5. Can I choose my cabin type?

Yes. You can choose between shared or private cabins, and in some cases, select upper or lower berths depending on availability. Note that if you book 2 tickets in a 4 berth sharing cabin you will be assigned 1 upper berth and 1 lower berth.

We’ll do our best to arrange your preferred cabin type when you book.

6. What if I miss the train?

If you miss the train due to personal reasons, the ticket is generally non-refundable. However, if you inform us at least 24 hours in advance, we’ll help resell your ticket (subject to availability and operator policy).

7. What are the baggage allowances for Sapa trains?

In general, there is no limit for baggage to be carried on board. However, passengers on the upper level does not have extra space for storing baggage and for lower level, one has the space under berth to store luggage. Therefore it is recommended that you carrry a day pack to Sapa or keep it as small as you can.

8. What is the latest time I must be present at the train station?

Please arrive at Hanoi Train Station (Ga Hà Nội) at least 30–45 minutes before departure to allow time for check-in, ticket verification, and boarding. The station can be busy, especially on weekends and holidays, so early arrival is strongly recommended.

1. Which platform do I use for trains to Lao Cai (Sapa)?

Trains to Lao Cai usually depart from Station B (120 Trần Quý Cáp Street), located behind the main station building. However you can enter the station from its main building on Le Duan street.

2. How early should I arrive before departure?

Arrive at least 30–45 minutes before departure to check tickets and find your carriage.

3. Can I show the eticket sent to my email to board the train?

Yes, each train will have their support stall at the train station. You can simply show your eticket to them to board the train.

4. How can I book transfer from Sapa to Lao Cai train station?

You can take a shared minibus, private car, or limousine van to get back to Lao Cai station. We offer private transfer at discounted price, for guests who book train tickets with us.

5. Are there ATMs at Lao Cai train station?

Yes, there are quite a number of ATMs right outside of Lao Cai train station. 

Sapa Bus - FAQs

1. How long does it take from Hanoi to Sapa by bus?

The journey from Hanoi to Sapa by bus takes around 5.5 to 6.5 hours, depending on traffic and weather. Hanoi - Lao Cai highways is a scenic ride although expect a little bit of bumpy parts here and there. The most scenic part is from Lao Cai to Sapa which takes about 1 hours of the journey. 

2. Where do buses to Sapa depart from in Hanoi?

All our buses pick up directly from your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter. If you hotel is not car-accessible we will set a meeting point closest to your hotel.

3. Can I bring luggage on the bus?

Yes. Most buses allow one suitcase and one small carry-on per passenger. However limousine bus has quite limitted storage space, we recommend you to leave the bigger piece of luggage at your hotel in Hanoi and collect when you come back. 

4. Is it safe to travel from Hanoi to Sapa by bus?

Yes. The Hanoi–Sapa highway is quite a smooth ride, making bus travel safe and convenient. Reliable companies use new vehicles, professional drivers, and follow strict safety standards. 

5. Should I choose bus or train?

The bus is faster, cheaper, and more direct, taking about 6 hours compared to the 8-hour train plus transfer. It’s ideal for budget travelers or those short on time. The train, however, offers a unique overnight experience with private cabins and a quieter ride. Both are safe and scenic—your choice depends on comfort and travel style.

6. How do I cancel my booking?

If you need to cancel your Hanoi–Sapa bus booking, please contact our support team by email as soon as possible. Each bus operator has its own cancellation and refund policy, which may vary depending on the ticket type and timing of your request. We’ll review your booking details, inform you of any applicable fees, and assist with the cancellation or rescheduling process. The sooner you reach out, the better we can help minimize costs and secure alternatives for your travel.

7. Are there restrooms on the bus?

There are no restrooms on the bus, but bus makes frequent stop on highway for you to use restroom.

8. How long in advance should I make the reservation?

It’s best to book your Hanoi–Sapa bus at least one to two weeks in advance, especially if you plan to travel during peak holiday seasons like November, December, and early January. During this time, popular limousine buses often sell out quickly so it's best to book at least 1 month in advance. Early booking not only guarantees your seat but also gives you better departure time options and smoother coordination with hotel check-in and tours.

1. What is included in a Sapa travel package?

Each package typically includes round-trip train or one way train ticket and one way bus tickets, hotel accommodation, and transfers between Lao Cai station and Sapa town. Some options also feature guided trekking tours or visits to local ethnic markets. 2. Why should I book your travel package instead of single service?

By booking a package, you save time and ensure a smooth, coordinated trip where all logistics are handled—from transportation to comfortable lodging. Although arranging your own independent travel has its excitement, a trip to Sapa often requires multiple logistics to be handled. Especially for family with young children, we strongly recommend you book a package.

3. How long should I stay in Sapa?

A 3–4 day trip is ideal for most travelers. This allows time for the overnight train or bus journey, one or two days to explore Sapa town and nearby villages, and a relaxing return. However we have had guests who allow a week for Sapa and nearby mountain area such as Lai Chau. This will allow for further indepth exploration. 

4. Are Sapa travel packages suitable for families?

Yes. Our packages include transfers from Lao Cai station to Sapa, comfortable hotels, and flexible activities, making them ideal for families with children. Easy trekking routes, cable car rides to Fansipan, and visits to local villages provide fun, educational experiences for all ages.

5. How early should I book Sapa travel package?

It’s best to book at least two to three weeks in advance, especially during September–November (harvest season). If you plan to visit Sapa during Christmas, it is best to book at least 2 months in advance to guarantee best options. 

6. Are meals included in Sapa travel package?

Breakfast is usually included with hotel stays, while other meals are flexible. We have detailed the meal options for each package (B= breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner). 

7. Are the treks in Sapa difficult? Is it suitable for casual travelers?

All village treks in our package are moderate, suitable for anyone with average fitness. Trails can be muddy or uneven after rain, but local guides adjust routes based on your pace. If you prefer gentle walks, half-day treks or short routes like Cat Cat Village are ideal. We will inform you in advance if the weather permits your trekking route, and you can feel free to discuss with us if you have any specific request regarding trekking. 

8. Can I customize the travel package (such as changing train or hotel)?

Yes. You can choose the train type, hotel category, number of nights, and add optional tours like Fansipan cable car or ethnic markets. Our team can tailor a package based on your schedule, budget, and interests for a smoother experience.

9. Is Sapa safe for children?

Yes, Sapa is a safe and family-friendly destination. The town is small, welcoming, and easy to get around. Most trekking routes can be adjusted for kids, and our local guides are very attentive to family needs. B

In most cases, you can receive a refund or partial refund if you cancel early enough. For last-minute cancellations, certain fees may apply. We recommend informing us promptly so we can assist with rescheduling or refunds, and help adjust your bookings smoothly.

1. How long does it take by train from Hanoi to Sapa?

The train from Hanoi to Lao Cai takes about 8 to 8.5 hours, traveling overnight. After arriving at Lao Cai station early in the morning, it’s about a 1-hour drive (35 km) up the mountain to Sapa town. This route is popular because it saves daytime travel and offers a comfortable rest while you move between destinations.

2. What types of cabins are available on the Sapa train?

Most Sapa trains offer soft-sleeper cabins with 4 berths (shared) or VIP 2-berth private cabins, with a few come with double bed options. Inside the train cabins you can find bedding, reading lights, air-conditioning, and shared restrooms in each carriage. Luxury trains such as Chapa Express, Fanxipan Express, and Sapaly Express provide upgraded interiors and amenities, while standard trains like Vietnam Railways offer budget-friendly comfort.

3. Are there toilets on the train? Is it near sleeping cabins?

Yes. All overnight trains between Hanoi and Lao Cai have Western-style restrooms located at the end of each carriage. Yes. You can book a private 2-berth VIP cabin or reserve all 4 berths in a shared cabin for privacy. Private cabins are ideal if you want complete privacy. Similarly if 3 passengers to occupy the whole cabin, you can book all 4 tickets in the 4 berth cabin. 

5. How to check in for Sapa train? How long does it take?

With successful payment, you’ll receive an e-ticket or voucher in advance via email. On the day of departure, arrive at Hanoi Railway Station (Tran Quy Cap Gate, 1 Tran Quy Cap Street) about 30–45 minutes before departure. Staff from your train company will help check your ticket, guide you to the correct platform, and exchange it for a boarding pass if needed. 6. Is food provided on Hanoi Sapa train?

Basic refreshments such as bottled water, tea, or snacks are often provided in premium cabins. However, options are limited, so bringing your own snacks, water, or instant noodles is a good idea. Hot water dispensers are available on most trains.

7. Can I charge my phone and laptop on the train?

Yes, most trains have electrical outlets inside each cabin or near the berth. However, power supply can sometimes be unstable, so it’s smart to carry a fully charged power bank for backup—especially if you plan to use your phone for photos or navigation upon arrival.

1. What is the best month to visit Sapa?

Sapa is beautiful year-round, but the best months to visit are October to November and March to May.

In autumn (September–November), the weather is cool and dry, and the rice terraces turn golden, creating some of the most stunning scenery in Vietnam. Spring (March–May) brings mild temperatures, clear skies, and blooming flowers across the valleys.

Summer (June–August) is warmer with more rain, but it’s also when the rice fields are lush and green. Winter (December–February) can be very cold, with foggy mornings and even occasional snow, adding a unique charm for adventurous travelers.

2. What to do early in the morning in Sapa? The train arrives very early.

Most trains from Hanoi reach Lao Cai early, and you’ll reach Sapa town around 6:00–7:00 a.m., before hotel check-in. It’s a great time to enjoy a local breakfast—try a hot bowl of pho, sticky rice, or coffee at a small café near the town center. You can also take a short walk around Sapa Lake or visit the morning market to see locals start their day. Many travelers relax at a spa or café until their rooms are ready, soaking in the fresh mountain air after the long ride.

3. What are top things to do in Sapa?

Good shoes with good grip make walking safer and more enjoyable. For short strolls around town, sneakers are fine, but for longer treks to villages like Lao Chai or Ta Van, light waterproof hiking shoes are best. Yes, it’s best to bring cash when visiting Sapa, including local markets and ethnic villages. Most ethnic vendors only accept cash for food, handicrafts, and souvenirs. Small denominations are especially useful so make sure to keep them handy. While ATMs are available in Sapa town (from banks like Vietcombank, BIDV, and Agribank), they only issue bigger notes (mostly 500,000 VND note or 20USD). It’s a good idea to withdraw money in Hanoi before your trip and exchange them for small notes to avoid the rush while in Sapa. 

8. How to get to Sapa from Lao Cai station?

After arriving at Lao Cai station by train, you’ll need to continue another 35 km uphill to reach Sapa town. The most common options are shared shuttle buses and private cars, which take about 1 hour. The road from Lao Cai to Sapa is one of the most breataking part of the whole transfer, with winding mountain roads and valley views. However if you are prone to motion sickness, it's best to take advanced medication. 

9. What day of the week are there local ethnic markets?

The local ethnic markets around Sapa take place on different days, depending on the specific market.

The biggest one is Bac Ha Market, held every Sunday, where many ethnic groups gather to trade goods and livestock.

If you cannot fit your trip onto a Sunday, worry not! There are other markets that you can get a taste of the mountain colors and cultures as well.
